Western Planning Resources Editor

Western Planning Resources (aka Western Planner) is seeking a contract-based editor to manage The Western Planner digital publications. This position includes managing our digital journal, website, scheduled emails, social media and outreach efforts. The contract would be for up to 40 hours a month and can be based anywhere in the western United States. It could be open to an individual or a company. The only required travel is to the annual conference, which rotates between the states each year.

AMOUNT: This is a contract for service. There are no benefits provided. Salary range (amount) depending on services and experience.


·         Must be a self-starter and able to work independently and on deadlines

·         Must be a proficient writer and editor

·         Must be able to update the website through a content management system, currently using Squarespace

·         Must be able to create an electronic newsletter through Constant Contact

·         Must be knowledgeable about Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn

·         Strong knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Indesign would be beneficial to help design marketing/outreach pieces

·         Must be able to take photos to help report on the annual conference and as needed

·         Must be able to manage and track articles through the editorial process and be able to work with many people in a virtual world

·         Some knowledge of the planning profession is preferred


·         Article recruitment, editing & copywriting (60 hours a year)

·         Produce 24 e-newsletters includes copywriting (3 hours each) (72 hours a year) plus distribute to chapters/members

·         Website updates/management allowance (6 Hours/Month) (72 hours a year)   

·         Admin duties to the president, WPR Board and Editorial Board (includes attendance at board meetings) (4 hours a month) (48 hours a year)   

·         Provide editor’s report (2x yearly) (15 hours)

·         Coordinate conference information and attend conference (20 hours plus overnight stays)   

·         Social Media (5 hours a month) (60 hours a year)

·         Create job ads and fulfill sponsorship benefits (3 hours a month) (36 hours a year)
